A gaggle? A confusion? A plurality?

Whatever collective noun you prefer, the world’s top central bankers, finance ministers and academics will be descending on Jackson Hole, Wyoming for the annual Economic Symposium. Expect lots of interviews and commentary from the sidelines of the event, which kicks off on Thursday.

With New York Fed president William Dudley suggesting US rates could rise in September, markets will be on the watch for any signals of intent from the Fed ahead of its policy meeting next month.

Ahead of this, Eurozone flash services and manufacturing data on Tuesday is the first data of note this week. UK inflation report hearings will also be closely followed after the Bank of England cut interest rates and inflation ticked up in July.

Wednesday’s crude oil inventories report from the US will be watched as ever, but perhaps with greater scrutiny now that there is yet again chatter about Opec and Russia working to freeze production.

Earnings season has pretty much wound down but there are still a few reports of note, including HP and Tiffany & Co from the US, as well as housebuilder Persimmon and advertising giant WPP in the UK. Rank’s full-year results come after its push to acquire William Hill.
