Week Ahead: FTSE companies post their quarterly results

It’s a quiet start to the new week with US markets closed Monday in recognition of President’s Day, while Industrial Production figures out of Japan and later the Eurozone are all the data we expect.

Slow start with data trickling in

Meeting minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s latest monetary policy meeting could grab the attention of Aussie traders overnight into Tuesday. While unlikely to have any immediate effect on interest rates any subtle change in language could see volatility in the Australian dollar.

Preliminary Eurozone data, in the form of Employment and Gross Domestic Product numbers, has potential to cause volatility for both the Euro and European indices; traders should watch these markets closely in Tuesday’s morning session. In the evening, keep an eye on Japan’s Import and Export data.

Mid-week market pick-up

Things heats up Wednesday as the day begins with UK CPI inflation data, followed by US Retail Sales figures and Canada’s CPI before US market open. In the evening we follow the FOMC meeting minutes. While the Fed’s stance has been clear so far – which is that there is no planned change to the current monetary policy for the foreseeable future – traders will still be following along for any hints we may get.

Worth following overnight going into Thursday is Australia's Unemployment data. As always, Initial Jobless Claims data out of the US is expected in the afternoon, helping us gauge the improvements in the US job market and overall strength of the US economy. We wrap the day up with US CPI data.

Friday, we expect preliminary Manufacturing and Services PMI data from Germany and the Eurozone, followed by the UK and the US. Although only preliminary readings, combined, these figures create an economy’s GDP, and markets have been reactive to indicators of economic strength, so markets could see volatility at the end of the week.

UK earnings take focus

With the bulk of US companies earnings behind us, UK blue chips take focus this week. Among those reporting their latest quarterly earnings are Vodafone, British American Tobacco, Barclays, Rio Tinto, and NatWest. Along with moving their individual share prices, many of the companies expected to post earnings have enough weight to move the FTSE100, so index traders will be following along.
